Here, visitors can see the mining location of the quarries of group A. Apart from the mining location of the abandoned quarry, the breccias are also visible, namely the waste of the marble processing, which is accumulated in piles. Today, the extent of the Group A quarries is not evident, because when they were abandoned, they were later used as areas for the disposal of breccias, which came from the mining of marble at the quarries of the other two groups. To remove a piece of marble from the bedrock, the ancient quarry workers used at first hoeing tools with which they opened grooves in order to define the perimeter of the desired part. Then, they used tools cutting the marble, in order to be released from the bedrock and removed. At the cited drawings, the techniques with which they used to cut the marble during the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods, are visible. The first drawing shows the techniques of the archaic period. After the initial drill of holes, small metal pins, which were inserted deeper with hammering ripping the marble, were placed in these openings. The next two drawings present the variation of this technique, during the Classical and Hellenistic period, when wider wedges were used. Unfinished column. At low levels of the quarry area, at various points of the quarries of group B, traces of the tools, which were used for the extraction of marble, are visible. Throughout antiquity, the quarry workers were able to dislodge large marble blocks, with geometric precision using wedges, sledgehammer, ax and spear, named respectively in ancient times, wedges, heavies, tikos and needles. Quarrying techniques during the Roman era At the given drawing, the quarrying technique, which was used during the Roman period, is visible. The tools which were used are: hammer and wide wedges, for the drilling and the detachment of marble bulks. At that time the Thassian marble became known and was in great demand throughout the Roman Empire and often decorates public buildings, monuments and mansions of prominent Roman citizens. Unfinished monolithic column Perhaps, looking from above, we cannot realize the height and the volume of this incomplete, monolithic column, which today, although it is half-covered with waste from the quarries, reveals the skills of the craftsmen of that time, who were able to create ornate marble objects, although they had a few tools at their disposal. What did it go wrong, and the column was left forever buried? We might never know. Looking closely at the column, we realize its size and volume. It is of nine meters height, like the height of a current, three-storey building. It is not known, for which port or which place was intended. But it is certain, that it was made to decorate an important building of the time. It is possible that it was intended for Rome, since the Romans had a high regard for the Thassian marble. It has been found that in the early Christian times, the marble of Alyki was exported to Greece (Thessaloniki, Aegina), Asia Minor (Pergamon, Sardis, Efesos), Italy (Ostia, Rome, Akouliia) and Syria (Antioch). Although it was found in the waste of a quarry of Group B, on the east coast of the peninsula, archaeologists believe that it was probably carved in the quarry A11, which is located in the interior of the peninsula. A closer look allows the visitor to notice that the final polishing of the largest part of the surface of the column, took place in the mining area. It was an important activity, which involved the removal of the unnecessary volume of the marble, which would cause greater load and of course additional difficulty in its transportation and its loading aboard. Only one strip was left rough and crude, probably to protect the column, during its transportation, while we can observe that it bears a Masonic symbol. If we observe the area from the side of the sea, we clearly see the vertical marble mining fronts. However, as time passed by, the waves of the sea have smoothed the remaining marbles, but also the fierce, southern wind has deformed vegetation. Although they operated firstly in different periods, there were also periods when quarries from different groups operated simultaneously. Therefore, the quarries from group A, within the peninsula, are the oldest ones, but they operated until the end of antiquity and they were abandoned in the early Christian times. The quarries from group B, on the eastern side of the peninsula, were in bloom in the early Christian period, but they started to operate earlier. At the time when the quarries from group B were developed, the exploitation of the quarries from group C, on the southern part of the peninsula started too. Impressive is the unfinished base of diameter 1,60m, which was found among the waste of A1 quarry. The quarries of Alyki are classified by French researchers in three groups: group A, where the quarrying work began, is inside the peninsula, while groups B and C are located along the eastern and southern coastline respectively. Ruins of an older one-room chapel It is easily distinguished that the Northern Basilica was rebuilt on the ruins of a one-room chapel, which was built around 400 - 425. A hundred or so years later, around 500, the three-aisled basilica was built. Today we see, what was revealed of this church by the archaeologists. The two early Christian basilicas operate until the early 7th century when the use of quarries stops and all of them were permanently abandoned. Next to the Northern Christian Basilica, as we have already seen, there is the Southern Christian Basilica. It is obviously bigger, had a pulpit, gallery and many rooms at the south part. It communicated with the Northern Basilica and its atrium, through three openings in the wall. Today, two columns of the internal colonnades of the Southern Early Christian basilica have been restored; the mainstay of the oldest damn was preserved, while in the area, there are only the foundations of the pulpit and the first rung of the western scale. At the incision, along the designing restoration of the South Early Christian basilica you can see on the left the arch of the sanctuary, on the right the cast with the staircase leading to the attic, the pulpit in the main aisle with relief decoration, the colonnade of the main temple and the attic decorated with relief slabs. The pulpit is decorated with relief slabs, now no longer visible in the area. They bear relief representations of peacocks, vine with birds, trees, undiagnosed type of quadruped animals and plants. After the prevalence of Christianity and during the early Byzantine period, between 500 and 600 AD, there were two churches which were gradually built over the ancient sanctuary, on the top of the hill, and they were of a wooden roof basilica type. The group of the churches, from 500 to 600 AD, did evolve in four different building phases and it got abandoned in 619, during the time of the Slavic invasions. In the ground plan which is presented, you could see the final phase. In both basilicas the sanctuary is separated from the main church with a marble barrier altar screen, while the main church is divided into three naves by two rows of columns. The south Basilica is older, it is markedly larger and it features an ornate marble pulpit with a staircase. The north Basilica it has on its west side an atrium with the biggest part of the latter having been roofed. On the west we could also see a baptistery with a circular baptismal font in its center, but also a space for funerary use. Burials have also been spotted both in the atrium, as well as inside the North Basilica. In both early Christian basilicas, the sanctuary stands out from the main church by a marble barrier of an altar screen, while the main church is divided into three naves by two rows of columns. The south Basilica is older, it is markedly larger and it features an ornate marble pulpit with a staircase. The north Basilica has on its west side an atrium with the biggest part of the latter having been roofed. On the west we could also see a baptistery with a circular baptismal font in its center, but also there is a space for funerary use. At the southwest of the South Basilica there are several surrounding buildings which were serving as utility rooms. In the axonometric drawing of the two early Christian basilicas, which is reproduced at a scale of 1: 500, you can see the magnitude of the churches and as well as their outbuildings. Have a close look firstly at the roof of the atrium, with its opening to be placed in its center in order to allow the light to pass through, and also look at the upper room of the South Basilica, the roof of which stands out from the roof of the rest of the church. At the photo you see the room of the Northern Basilica, which has funerary use. Within and outside the Northern Basilica and its atrium, thirteen tombs, which used to include bones of many people and few poor offerings, were discovered. The graves were covered with slabs of slate or marble. This cemetery was in use since 500 and for almost one century. At the base of the hill there is an opening of a cave. A second cave was located higher up on the hill, on the left of the path leading to the early Christian basilicas. Inside this cave, several offerings were found: Such as pottery and figurines which are dated from the Archaic to the Roman period. Today, this area is not open to visitors. An inscription of the 3rd century BC, found near the excavated buildings of the ancient temple, and it refers to a cave dedicated to Apollo. Probably one of the above two caves is dedicated to Apollo as it is mentioned in the inscription. The cave is already known since the early 20th century when the sightseer Baker-Penoyre visited Alyki. The sightseer then has found in the first niche, a fragment of parapet with an embossed cross and a written illegible inscription which cannot be found today, while on the second niche, he saw piles of bones. Today both niches are shaped, from the local people, to a small worship place dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The sanctuary was founded shortly after the arrival of the Parians at Thassos, in the mid-7th century BC, and it had continuous religious activities all the way up to the end of the worship of the ancient gods. Within the sanctuary, there are many inscriptions and carvings on several architectural parts of buildings, but also on marble bases, which were found. In one of these bases there is an inscription with prayers to the "Gods Saviors ", in other words to Dioskouri. According to the Greek mythology Dioskouri, Castor and Polydefkis, were twin brothers, sons of Zeus and Lyda and brothers of Helen of Sparta. They are considered to be protectors of sailors since they appear as constellations in order to help sailing. They are directly connected with the sanctuary of the Great Gods of Samothrace and the famous Kaviria Mysteries. The find of the inscription and the existence of two buildings with identical floor plan, led to the wrong assumption that the place was a sanctuary dedicated to the twin sons of Zeus, Dioskouri. Excavations revealed a surface, with overall dimensions of approximately 30 x 17 meters, which is occupied by two buildings with identical floor plans, but with one building to be slightly larger than the other. For the construction of buildings, the area was leveled and smoothed, while marble blocks were used in order to create a terrace. The buildings which were constructed for the operational needs of the sanctuary, have a portico with five columns and behind it there are two apartments. The northern apartment of each building is slightly larger than the equivalent southern apartment, of each building. The northern apartment of each building has a hearth made of marble bricks. The oldest archaeological layer in the north building, is dated on the mid-7th century BC. However, the building got the form it has today, during the period between 530 BC and the 3rd century AD. From approximately 470 to 465 BC, the Ionic columns of the portico of the northern building started to get replaced by Doric columns instead. This replacement was never completed. The smaller, southern construction was built between 500 and 470-465 BC. Both buildings were abandoned in the 3rd century AD. The buildings were serving as utility rooms where all the religious people gather, in order to host the symposiums, which followed the sacrifices and prayers for good navigation of the sailors who were transferring the marbles of the quarry. The excavations of the northern building took place in 1887 by Theodore Bent, and brought to light this archaic kouros, which today is located at the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul. The archaic kouros, is a typical representation of Thassian archaic sculpture which demonstrates the sovereignty of the artistic standards of Paros, which was the metropolis of the colony of Thassos. The translation of the inscription is approximately the one follows: Good Luck! Wishes for a good journey to the lucky Hercules from Thessaloniki, a ship which belongs to Epiktitos and Zoilos, and also good luck to Zoilos, the great merchant, called “archikerdemporos”. Archikerdemporos was probably the name of the title of the head of a group or a trade union of merchants. In other signs the term “nafkliros” is displayed instead. In the north building, the sanctuary of Dioscuri as it is called, and on the pillar of the portico with the Doric columns, there are carvings preserved which are dated since antiquity. In these inscriptions, carved out probably by visitors of the sanctuary, we can read the names of the latter and also perhaps the names of their partners as well. So in the picture shown, we could read the following: NIKOBULE OF EPHESUS GOOD TRUTH VITHYS GOOD In another part of the pillar, symbols are inscribed on the marble, which could probably reveal the sexual orientation of the visitors of the site! The first Greek colonists, who arrived on the island in the early 7th BC century, are Parians who settled after going through hard battles with the local Thracian tribes on the north side of the island, where the port is today, where they discovered the ruins of the ancient city of Thassos. It is likely that Parians chose Thassos due to the potential to extract gold, as well as silver, lead, copper and iron, but also because of the quarrying of marble, and also because of the precious and plentiful timber, which fed all the local shipyards in order to build the fleet which was promoting the products of the island, including the famous, Thassian wine throughout the ancient Greek world. The exploitation of the marble quarries, as well as the gold and silver mines of the inland of Thrace brought during ancient times,a great economic growth and prosperity throughout the island. Thassos developed its own coinage and its coins circulated widely in the ancient world. On the front side of the coins there is a representation of themes related to the worship of Dionysus: either the god of wine himself, or his followers Satyrs and Maenads. On the back side, and also depending on the historical period, there are representation of dolphins, craters, concave squares, or even Hercules. A silver Stater of Thassos of the Classical Age: A representation of a typical Dionysian scene of a Silenus who grabs a resisting Mainada, the resistance of the latter is indicated by her right hand which is raised with an open palm. This is dated back to the 5th century BC (around 463-411 BC), it has diameter of 21 mm and its weight is 8.66 grams. On the back side, a concave square appears. A silver four drachma coin of Thassos of the Roman Age: It pictures the head of the young Dionysus crowned with ivy. This is dated back to the 2nd century BC (after 148 BC) and it has diameter of 30 mm and its weight is 16.92 grams. On the back side there is an illustration of: Hercules with lion skin and a bat and there is an inscription which says "HERCULES SAVIOR OF THE THASSIANS". It is the northernmost <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_island" title="Greek island" class="mw-redirect">Greek island</a>, and 12th largest by area. <b><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thasos_town" title="Thasos town" class="mw-redirect">Thasos</a></b> is also the name of the largest town of the island (also known as <i>Limenas Thasou</i>, "Harbour of Thasos"), situated at the northern side, opposite the mainland and about 10 kilometres (6 mi) from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keramoti" title="Keramoti">Keramoti</a>. Here, and at around the 2nd or 3rd century AD, a young virgin was buried. On the west side, an inscription with fifteen verses is visible, while on the north side of the sarcophagus, you can see a carved ancient ship, similar to the ones which were used to carry and trade the marbles of the region. With the exception of this sarcophagus, as well as few tombstones, there is nothing else spotted or found from the ancient settlement. The text of the inscription is considered to be the words of a girl who died before she could get married. This information was provided to us by the same deceased young girl who according to the verses, she says “I, as well as the other virgins, didn’t feel at all the pleasures of the delightful dances. And this happened because my mother mourned for my death very early. And my father did not accompany me together with a young man, to the bridal chamber "(verses 9-12). According to the beliefs of the time, dead virgins were able to communicate with the living, and this is due to the fact that at another point on the inscription we read that: "God gives the right to the virgins, even after their death, to be able to talk to all people, as if they were alive "(verses 7-8).
