<text>Entrance of the Archaeological Site
Since ancient times and towards the south of the ancient city of Thassos, in the region of Alyki, a second much smaller settlement was created and it got developed by the exploitation of the existing marble. Time, as well as human activities, economic and quarrying, left their indelible marks on Alyki. Visitors can tour the archaeological site and see monuments which are dated all the way from the Archaic period to the Byzantine period, but they can also see the sites of the ancient marble quarries which were very accurately described by the archaeologists as an "open museum of ancient technology".
At the entrance of the Archaeological site, there is a sign from the Archaeological Authority of Kavala and Thassos, which displays a floor plan with all the religious buildings of Alyki, topographic map of the peninsula with general information, and a proposed circular route, which enables the visitor to get a clear picture of the area and its history.
The antiquities of the peninsula of Alyki were known to the foreign sightseers as early as the 19th century, when the island was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. The first excavations on the site of an ancient temple, took place from 1886 to 1877, by Theodore Bent. In 1924, A. Laumonier and Y. Bequignon continued the excavation which Bent had started before. However, proper regular excavation activities on the site started by the French Archaeological School in 1961, and they were led by J. Servais and P. Bernard. These activities got completed in 1964.
The first excavations in the early Christian basilicas were led by F. Salviat, in 1964, and they continued, during the periods 1969-1973 and 1976-1977, under the command of Jean-Pierre Sodini.
There are two versions considering the current name of the region. The first version is based on the testimony of Emmanuel Miller, who names the region "Alki". The latter word in ancient Greek means: power, strength and vigor. This name is probably related to the strong economic activity as well as the big number of castles of the region, castles which aimed to control the quarries as well as the countryside, and which were found by the French, archaeological, surveys.
Later on, probably due to alteration of the original name, the area was named "Alyki" and that happened because of its supposed salt deposits, during the summer months, which are formed on the cavities of the quarry, cavities which the villagers use for their olives.
Today, there are no such deposits anywhere on the bay, even in its drier places. The only sediment which you can observe in these places is crumbled marble dust, caused for the erosion due to sea waves and the wind, and there is nothing related to salt, or even a small quantity of it. </text>

At the same time, the stone huts of the local fishermen and olive growers, are serving today visitors as places of hospitality and catering. Most of the written material related to Alykes, comes from publications of French excavations, it also comes from the guide of Thassos of the French School of Archaeology, and also from personal records of Tony Kozelj & Manuela Wurch-Közelj. On each of the pictures which will be presented, there will be a separate reference with the name and the copyrights holder. </text>

<text>The peninsula of Alyki is located on the southeastern side of Thassos, 32km from the port. On both sides of the peninsula, there are formed two natural creeks that were used as ports from ancient times. At the edge and across the Southeast side of the peninsula lies the ancient marble quarry which operated throughout antiquity until the Byzantine period. The ongoing activity had as a result a big part of the peninsula to be incurved almost to the sea and when the sea level goes down, the salt remains on the walls. Those natural salt marshes gave their name to the Salt Lake area, a name that is certified by the late Byzantine season. Traces of human occupation on the peninsula already were traced back to the 7th century BC in cave sanctuary in the eastern creek, where it is believed two ancient churches dedicated to currently unknown deity , the ruins of which lie on the beach of the eastern creek. Moreover, archaeological interest present the ruins of two early Christian basilicas which dating from the 5th and 6th century AD the fifth century A.D.. The quarries were abandoned sharply, because of the Slavic invasions. Today the Alyki area has been declared as an archaeological site and a landscape of natural beauty and archaeological interest.Service Unit: 18th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical AntiquitiesTel.: +302521031365</text>

Most of the written material related to Alykes, comes from publications of French excavations, it also comes from the guide of Thassos of the French School of Archaeology, and also from personal records of Tony Kozelj & Manuela Wurch-Közelj. On each of the pictures which will be presented, there will be a separate reference with the name and the copyrights holder.</text>

The settlement of Maronia, under the Ottoman Empire, was ruled by the general meeting of residents, the elders, the Committee of the Churches and the Ephorate of Schools. Works of this period are the churches, the stone streets and the School of Maronia, donation of Hatzeas brothers, which was erected in 1908 and functioned until a few years ago, as a Primary School. At the same time, under the Ottoman Empire, public fountains are constructed, providing running water in every neighborhood and making the residents’ lives more comfortable.
The school was built from 1906 to 1908 and followed the type of neoclassical architecture. Many architectural parts from the Ancient Theater of Maronia (mainly stands) were incorporated in the building.
A preserved photograph of the four Hatzeas brothers: Stavros, Efstratios, Photios and John. They were donors and benefactors of the place. They were professionally active in Constantinople, Smyrna, Alexandria and Tripoli, they sponsored charitable projects and student scholarships while they endowed young girls from Maronia.</text>

              <text>Paliochora, Byzantine Maronia
The Early Christian and Byzantine town of Maronia is much smaller in size compared to the ancient city. The ancient city-state, of 4,240 acres, is limited during that time, on the southwestern end, in a fortified town (castle), with an area of only 190 acres. It corresponds to the current coastal settlement of Agios Charalambos where there are the ancient and the modern port. It also corresponds to the olive grove, at the place of "Paliochora". In the 4th century AD Maronia becomes a bishopric.
In the center of the Byzantine state, the foundations of a three-aisle early Christian basilica have been excavated and they are dated from the 5th-6th century AD. Because of the existence of earlier buildings or the crossing of a nearby street, the patio deviates from the longitudinal axis. The excavations of the Archaeological Service in Byzantine Maronia began in 1973 and became more systematical since 1985.
The Middle-Byzantine wall that surrounds the town, has the shape of an irregular trapezoid. On the north side it was reinforced with a rampart, while at the corners there are four-sided towers.
After the destruction of the early Christian basilica, the area, in the 7th-8th century, was transformed into a vast graveyard. The graves were cists and mostly without offerings. Many of the tombs belonged to infants and children. In the patio, the marble of the central courtyard was completely destroyed.
During the middle-byzantine period, at the ruins of the early Christian basilica, a part of a middle-byzantine settlement and the cemetery of the same period were built. The habitation lasted from the 9th-10th century until the second half of the 13th century. The buildings were incorporated into the royal building and they were built with the same material. Inside the buildings, many things were found such as; jars, pots slots, hobs, a vaulted oven with a pot inside, small pits with shells, a Byzantine amphora and bones. In the northern part of the atrium a three-part secular building of impressive size and with a second floor was built. The mansion, due to the findings which were found there (including glazed pottery in the pit and a small pot of Chrism) is probably identified with the house of a prominent person from Maronia. Moreover, in the eastern part of the aisles of the basilica, two one-room chapels made with clay were established, which continued the tradition of worship in the area. The rich glazed pottery, the coins, the lead seals, the stamps and the crosses indicate the continuous habitation of the area, over the years, until the 13th century.
At the floor plan the excavated remains of the basilica are illustrated with blue color and with orange color, the remains of the buildings.
In the southern middle-byzantine chapel, as we can observe in the aerial photograph, the mosaic floor of the south aisle of the early Christian basilica was preserved, in the area of the sanctuary. On the laurel wreath decoration rested the altar.
Unfortunately, the column-base covers the dedicatory inscription of the sponsor that was in the center of the wreath.
Similarly, in the narthex of the northern chapel, there were two large rectangular burial sites. They were built by architectural parts of an older building which were reused, while they had successive burials and relics inside them.
The fact that the residents had their tombs inside the walls and next to their homes is a sign of insecurity with which they lived.
The mosaics of the early Christian basilica have been uncovered and preserved. They are located mainly in the arcades of the atrium and in the nave. They are characterized by a wide variety of colors and elaborate designs with well worked details. The striking designs are respectively reminiscent of mosaics in buildings of the same period in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.
In the central aisle, a mosaic inscription states the name of a sponsor: Varnavas, who contributed to the construction of the mosaic floor "for prayer" for the happiness of his family. There were other dedicatory inscriptions for other clergy or laity, which did not survive. The zones of the floor are separated with each other by white stripes.
The mosaic floors of the atrium are preserved in a better condition. On the south arcade a decoration was discovered, which is unique in the mosaics of Greece: the "nodes of Hercules", known from the Hellenistic art, forming octagons. Inside the octagons, we encounter various topics: birds, leaves, fruits, flowers, vases, geometric themes. A characteristic element is the depiction of a dolphin with a trident, but also a bird that escapes from its cage. On the north arcade there is a ruined depiction of a hare with grapes. The topics are clearly from the ancient Greek iconography and were used symbolically or for purely decorative purposes.
Scaly wheels are depicted with crosses inside them, wavy strips, spiral meanders, stepped triangles, lotus flowers, bay leaves and numerous patterns.
The angles in the panels are decorated with fleurs.
In the center of the sanctuary of the early Christian basilica, a significant number of ivory findings was discovered, which are representative samples of sculpture, dated from the late 5th to the early 6th century.
Two objects are reminiscent of right feet soles with sandals.
Two embossed, full-length figures, praying, were also found.
The first figure represents a young, beardless man, with short, rounded headdress, wearing a chiton and a himation.
The second figure, is preserved headless and represents a man in military uniform. Probably it is the prophet Daniel, who prays among lions.</text>

In adjacent areas to the east of the Roman Propylon , a building complex has been found, which was possibly used as a grain warehouse. Moreover, a part of the paved road of the Roman Agora has been found with 8m width and smaller buildings on either side, probably part of a commercial district. Of interest are the large clay jars, which are on the left and right of the excavation.
Inscription in honor of Emperor Hadrian. It was found at Agios Charalambos beach in the narthex of the Early Christian basilica and is kept in the Archaeological Museum of Komotini. It is a rectangular marble pedestal, of one meter height and approximately seventy cm width. It is dated in 131 AD, and therefore can be connected with the tour of the Roman emperor in the cities of Thrace and the corresponding attribution of gratitude and honors to him from the Maronites, after the known favorable attitude, that Hadrian showed towards their demands, with regards to the city’s benefits.</text>

              <text>Roman Propylon
During the Roman period, the city experienced a new prosperity phase. It was taken advantage of the free city regime and the significant improvement of the road network for the transfer of goods. The Egnatia Street shunned the beach and passed north of Mount Ismaros. The access was possible through some passages.
Ruins of buildings from this period, we find at the port of Agios Charalambos, 4-5 km south of the town of Maronia. At the entrance towards the Roman Forum, a monumental propylon from local marble is preserved, which was erected in honor of the Emperor Hadrian (124-125 AD). A characteristic element of the monument is the triple arched openings arranged in two rows.</text>

This portico was leading to a large public space, likely the city market, in Roman times and is the work of the emperor Hadrian, who visited the Maroneia during the 124-125 AD. The Maronites then honored him with a statue which has been lost. But the pedestal with an inscription was found and kept in the garden of the Museum of Komotini.Service Unit: 19th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities Phone: +30 2531022411</text>
