<text>The inner, or transverse walls
The transverse walls of the city, divide it into two almost equal parts. As we pass among them, we are approaching the highest point of the Byzantine small town Polystylon, where there is also the Episcopal Church.
The site within the fortification wall is divided into three parts with two transverse walls, west and east, separating the Byzantine city from west to east in the Lower, the Middle and the Upper City.
West transverse wall
The west, transverse wall is located east of the central gate, and 150meters away from it. The wall is visible in the largest part of its total length which is approximately 155 meters. The wall was built with stones, which were mostly untreated. Very few blocks could get found among these stones. On the west side of the wall there are six towers, which were built similarly to each other, five of which are four-sided and one is circular.
East transverse wall
The east, transverse wall is found across the Middle City and towards the east, 110meters away from the first, transverse wall and towards the east. Its total length is approximately 75meters.
There is a tower formed at the point of the connection of the wall with the northern part of the outer fortification. There is one more tower formed approximately 12.5 meters away from the latter one and towards the south. Few parts of the tower that survived in situ, while other parts of the upper structure have collapsed around him. Considering these remains, the construction could be dated during the post-byzantine years. Perhaps it was a construction activity of John the 6th Kantakouzinos.

<text>During the 14th century, around 1341-1346, Abdera, which during the Byzantine period was named as Polystylon, like all the other Thracian cities, faced the consequences of the civil war which erupted between Anna Palaiologina, widow of the Emperor Andronikos the 3rd, and John Katakouzinos, this happened while the Ottomans are only one step away from intruding the Byzantine empire.
The clouds of this fratricidal war which got marked from “unholy alliances”, become more and more dense in the region and soon enough the Ottoman conquest years will follow.
John Kantakouzinos visits Polystylon in 1342 while he was on his way to Serbia in order to seek for allies. Kantakouzinos supplied the city with wheat and also placed a patrol guard in the castle, the castle which he was stating as “coastal town”. That same year, in 1342, the imperial fleet under the commands of Admiral Duke Apokaukos, a known enemy of Kantakouzinos, sailed at the port of Abdera / Polystylon, while on the following year, in 1343, the fleet of Omour Beys who was the emir of Aydinio, docks in Abdera in order to provide help and support to his ally Kantakouzinos.
In the pictures, the first escutcheon belongs to the Paleologos’ family, and it has their monogram in the middle of the two-headed eagle, however, the second escutcheon belongs to the Kantakouzinos’ family.
From 1343 to 1345, the surrounding region is in the hands of the Bulgarian bandit Momtzilou, who comes from the mountain Rodopi, and he is an ally of Anna Palaiologina, the bandit occupies Xanthia, or Xanthi as the city is named today, and temporarily, he controls the entire region. Polystylon, at that time, was a fortified naval town, which communicated with the rest of the Thracian inland via two roads, one of which was leading northwest to Xanthia and the other one was leading northeast to Peritheorion or Anastasioupolis, north of the Lake Vistonida, which during these times was floating up to its north side. During the upcoming years of the Ottoman Empire, the coastal city of Polystylon was abounded for good, and so the post-Byzantine estate was gradually established approximately 5 kilometers further north, at the location which Abdera exist today. </text>

              <text>Single – nave Temple.
A simple, single-nave Byzantine church, which is dated back to the 12th century and, based on its location and use, was considered as a Cemetery. This small size temple, was built from architectural parts collected from the surrounding area, and it was used after the destruction of the older royal cemetery, which was located outside the walls.
The dimensions of the temple are 7,25m x 5,40m with a three-sided exterior niche on its eastern side. Externally, and on both entrance sides two pilasters are formed. The floor is made of bricks. The masonry is very meticulous and is consisted of horizontal layers of large, carved marble and limestone, which were coming from earlier buildings.
Around the church there is a cemetery, from which sixty four graves got examined. The majority of these graves were box and pit shaped. The cemetery, which also has a yard, is dated back to the 13th century and is probably the cemetery of the village in the late Byzantine years. Perhaps this could be an indication of the gradual, descend in the number of people of the city.
Here, it appears for the first time the burial of the dead inside wooden coffins, a fact which is indicated by the great number of nails found in the area and specifically in positions which identify the form of the burial.

              <text>Baptistery
The octagonal Baptistery, belonged to an earlier church. It was placed on the north-eastern corner of the Episcopal Church, and it was certainly used in the early years (9th – 10th century) of operation of the Episcopal Church. The built baptismal font was placed on the east side of the Baptistery, and not in its center, that happened in order to create a bit more space for the people participating in the mystery.
The Baptistery is carefully built with hewn stones in successive layers (Bakirtzis, Zikos 1984, 15). Plaster was used as a binder and between the horizontal layers of the stones, at the joints, slabs were placed in order to provide a more solid structure. Externally, the octagon is a normal one with its side to be 2,40m. Internally, it deviates as its walls don’t have equal width. The entrance opens to the north aisle of the church and has a width of 1,27m. Three windows are opened on the eastern, northern and western side. On a later state, the entrance of the temple got walled and the western window turned into an inlet opening. This probably meant that the baptistery was not used any more.
The baptismal font of the Baptistery is built. For its construction, small stones and mortar were used, while internally it has a hydraulic mortar coating. The baptismal font has a cruciform shape, with its 3 out of the 4 candle edges to be rounded.

              <text>Episcopal church

The Episcopal Church is the largest church found within the walls of Polystylon. You can notice the marble threshold of the entrance with the cavities where the door of the Church rests.
The Episcopal Church is the largest church building of the Byzantine city. It was founded in the 9th-10th century and rebuilt in the 11th century. Built on the ruins of an earlier Christian basilica, the church seems to have an uninterrupted operation at least until the 14th century when it was destroyed during the reign of Paleologos. It's a, big, three-aisled basilica with interesting architectural elements, as in many parts of its external walls you can see mortars with decorative coating such as the rosette with a cross in red colour, which is on the north side of the church.
The Episcopal Church has dimensions 23,90m x 15,90m and found to be founded, probably over an earlier, Early Christian, basilica. It dates back to 9th-10th century (Dadaki 1991, 354).
On the northeast corner the octagonal Baptistery of the previous, Early Christian, basilica has been annexed.
The church consists of a narthex, nave and sanctuary and various building phases are distinguished. The Byzantine basilica was built with meticulous rubble interrupted in height of successive rows of brickwork. Additional features in the construction of the monument, as the technique of hidden brick and engravings on the outside coating and joints, that mimic carved stones in a row, show the Constantinople effect (Bakirtzi 1994).
Even today, you could distinguish on the site several embossed lintels made from marble, which have representations of birds, plants but also representations of the lunar cycle.
On the north wall of the church, a crucified rosette was found, today it is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Abdera.
Outside the main temple, and tangential to the side of the north wall, you could spot in near perfect conditions, two sarcophagi made out of local limestone. One sarcophagus is on the north side of the baptistery. Perhaps the sarcophagi are coming from the ancient city of Abdera and got used again, for a second time, during the Byzantine period.
This small square building, which is located on the north side and is adjacent to the entrance of the Episcopal Church, was declared by investigators to be the Bishopric which possibly was the home of each Bishop of Polystilon of that time.
This is the Bishopric, as it is represented in this overall architectural sketch, made by the scholars of the region. </text>

              <text>Aisled basilica with cemetery
Outside the precincts of the Byzantine settlement, as was customary, the cemetery was sprawled. Outside of the Polystylon, and north from it, but inside the archaeological site of ancient Abdera an aisled basilica was discovered. It occupies the space outside the west gate of the ancient wall and today is included in the fenced archaeological site of ancient Abdera. It was built with dimensions 14,50m x 9,90m and consists of a narthex, nave and sanctuary. It presents three phases.
It is about a cemetery basilica, which was built as customary outside the existing walls, and around it developed the first cemetery of the Byzantine settlement. The basilica is dated after the early Christian era and before the 9th century. All the development phases of the temple are shown out in the diagram .
The splint consists of a single room, the same width as the nave. In the middle of the west side it's the main entrance of the temple and in the middle of the east side of the narthex there is the entrance to the nave of the church. The walls of the narthex, where they are preserved, are built of hewn stone coming from buildings of antiquity, with binder plaster mixed with soil.
The nave is divided into three aisles by two walls 60 centimeters thick, which brought probably arched openings to connect the aisles.
The sanctuary is east of the central aisle. It ends in a semicircular internally and externally niche, with especially meticulous masonry from laminated uncut stones and limestone slabs and large binder, powerful plaster.
During the second phase only the middle aisle is used. The floor of the nave and the apse was raised and covered with lithoplakes.
During the third phase a one-room chapel was built in the temple of the 2nd phase.
A one-room chapel which was constructed on the outer northeastern corner of the basilica is perhaps the 4th phase.
Around the basilica and within it there are many graves, cist mostly, which are part of the extensive cemetery that exists in the area outside the west gate of the classic wall.</text>
