<text>Baths

The baths which were found in the western interior side of Polystylon walls.
In the Byzantine Polystylon, one of the oldest buildings, now in ruins, it's this small bath. It is dated in the 4th-5th century. Public baths during the Roman era and also in Byzantine times were of particular importance for the social life of the inhabitants of a city. As distinguished in the given figure, the baths consist of three distinct areas: the entrance and the bathers locker, the middle main space, with very thick walls and with a raised floor (hypocaust), which are the main heated baths, and on the south side,it is the third space, the focal point of the baths, which provides with warm air and water, the bathroom areas.
The middle room (caldarium) has dimensions 4,05m x 2,65m and retains some of the hypocaust. Specifically, two rows of brick, four-sided small pillars on the floor, with four small pillars, each with 0,47m height are preserved. The room seems it had seven sets with four or five small pillars in each row. The bottom of the hypocaust is paved with clay tiles.A clay square cross-section pipe for the air drawing enters the eastern wall of the room, covered with stone slabs without mortar.
Finally, on the south side of the baths, there is the "focal point" with the feeding tube (praefurnium), in which two building phases are distinguished. The south wall and a small section of the eastern wall belong to the first phase.
The baths date approximately in the 4th century. However, two bronze Aurelian coins (270-275 AD), were found in the mortar of the south wall of the south space during the second building phase, a fact which shifts probably earlier the constuction of this public bath.</text>

<text>Here is a part of the fortification of Polystylon which was visible before the excavation of the 12th Inspectorate of Byzantine Antiquities. During 1983, much of the fortification was revealed , in length of about 130 metres. The main volume of the fortification precincts consists of a wall of 1.35 - 1.75 meters width. Three construction phases were found, of which the oldest belongs to the Classical and the newest to the Byzantine period.
It was found that the Byzantine wall is built on the foundations of the wall of classical times that probably belonged to the acropolis of Abdera besause of an investigation made by a local incision, (Bakirtzis 1982, pp. 25). A treasure of copper coins of the emperor Michael IV Paphlagon (1034 - 1041), which found in the internal side of the wall, leads to the view that the Byzantine walls were erected in the 11th century. References from Kantakouzenos (II, 226) and Gregoras (II, 626) on the reconstruction of the walls during the first half of the 14th century are probably about repairs (Bakirtzis 1982, pp. 25).
The four-sided towers A and B with dimensions l 7.65m x 6.00m and the lower portion of the interval belong to the first building phase, this of Classical period,(Bakirtzis 1983, 13). The eastern wall of tower A defines the central Gate of Fortification.
Warehouses were revealed in contact with the interior and exterior part of tower B and a bakery was found at the external southeast corner .The wall is double between tower B and tower C. The interior part has a width of 1.90m and it forms a small gate in the northwest curved-corner. The outer wall, which is posterior, has a width of 0.70m and dates back to the third construction phase, that of the 11th century. Both walls are built with stones from buildings of antiquity, while a few bricks are used too.
The corner quadrangular tower C, with dimensions 6,90m x 5,40m is preserved to a height of 4,30m. It is built with stones from older buildings using mortar. That tower that is not connected functionally to the wall, is posterior. In the interior, a brick floor was discovered. (Bakirtzis FC 1983, 14).</text>

<text>In Byzantine times, Abdera was renamed into Polystylon (which means many coloumns), probably from the many ruins that there were generally at that time and mainly from ancient columns (pillars) transported from the area. The city was shrinking in size and in population compared to the ancient city and is limited to a small township near the ancient port where the acropolis of ancient Abdera was. The Polystylon was mentioned in written sources for the first time, in 879 AD, as an episcopal seat, at the meeting in Istanbul, which was then subject to the Metropolis of Philippi.
Much later, in 1365 - 1370, the bishopric was distracted from Philippi because of the distance and was attached to the archbishopric of Maronia. It is known from sources that Peter is the last bishop Polystylon, who signed a document on the ownership of small monasteries of Saints Constantine and Helen, which were in Thassos, in 1363.
The archaeological research in the area of ancient Abdera started in 1950 by Dimitrios Lazaridis. But systematically, the Polystylon was excavated between 1982 and 1986 under the program "Thrace" of the Archaeological Society, headed by Charalambos Bakirtzi, Superintendent of the 12th Committee of Byzantine Antiquities at that time and under the supervision of Professor George Bakalaki. The study was continued in the years 1990 - 1995 by the same Committee by the archaeologist Stavroula Dadaki, who supervised also the work carried out in the years 1997 - 1999 under the Second Community Support Framework. All these excavations revealed the following:

1. the outer fortification wall
2. part of the rampart of fortification
3. intra-urban internal transverse walls
4. the Episcopal church of the city
5. The single-nave church Cemetery
6. aisled basilica with a cemetery outside the walls, in front of the Western Gate of the ancient city and in the current archaeological site of Abdera
7. the Late Roman baths
At the byzantine Polystlon, were excavated by chronological order, a bath inside the western part of the wall.
Episcopal Church, in the eastern part of Polystylon. Octagonal Baptistery, attached to the northern wall of the Episcopal Church. Simple, one-room, Byzantine cemetery church, south of the tower A.
Here is the site of ancient Abdera. One of the images was taken in Thrace, in 1904, by the founder of the Christian Archaeological Society, George Lampakis. The extent of the area included in the photo, reminds us of the ancient times, and of the malicious recommendation of the cynic philosopher Diogenes, to the people of Abdera: that is to be careful, not to let the city out, from the arrogantly big and spacious gate, that they had built at the walls of their city. However,we should imagine that the extent of the ancient city, was much larger than that shown in the photo of Lampakis.
Here is a view of the coastline up to the Delta of Nestos, from the archaeological site, in the 1960s.

<text>The Byzantine township of Polystylon occupies the acropolis of the ancient city of Abdera. Its defences, approximately 800 metres long, follow more or less the contours of the hill. Built on bedrock and, at places, over the Classical defences, their width varies from 2.40 to 3.50 metres, depending on whether the wall is single (north and south sides) or double (northwest side). Several rectangular towers and an outer wall along the more vulnerable, northwest side complete the Byzantine system, while two gates on the north wall and a small one on the west allowed access into the town. Within the defences, an internal wall divides the town into two roughly equal parts, while a second one forms, together with the eastern defence wall, the Byzantine acropolis with its two towers dating to the years of John Kantakouzenos. Recent excavation revealed a series of religious and public buildings of the Byzantine period. One of the latter, located in the west part of the acropolis, is a rectangular bath building, with three rooms, of which the middle one was heated. Near the main north gate is a single-aisled church, its dome supported by four shallow arches. The church stands in the middle of a cemetery with simple cist graves containing wooden coffins. The church was built in the twelfth century and destroyed in the fourteenth. The middle section of the settlement, at the peak of the acropolis hill, contained the episcopal church. This Middle-Byzantine basilica consisted of a portico, a narthex, a naos divided into three aisles by two rows of massive pillars, and a sanctuary. Under the floor of large marble slabs of various sizes were contemporary and later graves. A square room at the northwest corner of the church is interpreted as the bishop's quarters. The episcopal church was built in the ninth century and destroyed in the mid-fourteenth century. It was founded over the remnants of an earlier three-aisled basilica, of which parts are still visible in the central and south aisle. The baptistery at the northeast corner of the church, with its cruciform baptismal font, belongs to the earlier building. Between the baptistery and the bishop's quarters is a portico used for burials. Two built graves erected against the north wall of the church are thought to belong to important people. It is here that a painted rosette within a cross of the eleventh-early twelfth century was found; it is now in the Abdera Archaeological Museum. Around the church are partially excavated houses and various other buildings that have not been investigated yet. North of the acropolis, outside the defences and near the west gate of the Classical defences, are the remains of the earliest (ninth century AD) cemetery of the Byzantine settlement. Several cist graves are visible today. The funerary three-aisled basilica shows four occupation phases.Service Unit: LA Ephoreia of Prehistoric and Classical AntiquitiesTel.: +302541051003Source: http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/eh352.jsp?obj_id=59...</text>

<text>Today, there are obvious identified traces in one of the five ancient, port structures. In the southwestern ancient port of the city of Abdera, the eastern breakwater is mainly preserved. The breakwater automatically protects the port, from the very annoying, even today north - eastern wind, "Mesi", as it was called by the ancient Greek sailors.
The ancient breakwater, built by large, granite boulders, is currently on the eastern side of the modern port and protects sufficiently the harbor from the strong winds of the area. On its edge, even today, you can see in the center of the modern port and submerged in water, the round base, which supported the ancient lamp (beacon). View of the ancient breakwater, as seen by the Byzantine Polystylon.
Throughout the period of Antiquity, the port facilities of Abdera were the most dynamic and with greater commercial traffic among the ports of the Aegean Thrace. Built in a strategic position, between Thassos and Samothrace, they had supervision of maritime, trade routes in the region and led very soon the city of Abdera in great economic boom. The port facilities of Avdira were so robust and strong, as reported by ancient sources, that during the first Persian invasion of Greece in 512 BC, Darius, forced his general Megabazos to transfer all the ships of Thasos and trap them in the port of Abdera.</text>

<text>In the archaeological site which can be visited, the excavations so far, give us the image of a city with continuous habitation, although suffered physical phenomena, and successively, the human intervention. From the Archaic to the Roman years the city evolves and adapts to the demands of each era. The successive phases of occupation are often not easily comprehensible to the visitors.
In the picture we see, at the first level, the wall of a building of the Roman Imperial period and at the second level, we see the quadrangular funerary monument base of the 1st century BC. At the third level we have the city walls of the 4th century, while in the background, houses of Roman imperial times.
In the picture: a headstone, dated in the 2nd century BC which refers to Asklipiodoros’ son, Nicanor and his wife Mitrodora with the inscription: NICANOR ASKLIPIODOROU / MITRODORA ASKLIPIODOROU.
Bone utensils, which were drug dozers during the Roman Imperial period.
Various findings from the archaeological site as: a clay doll with movable parts (plagona), gold earrings, dices, clay figurines, and clay, baby rattles. They give us valuable information on the everyday life of the residents of ancient Abdera. They are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Abdera.
The mosaic depicting dolphins and lilies was found in a house floor, dated in the 3rd century BC and today it is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Abdera.
Besides the economic and urban development of the city, the sciences and the arts develop and the city becomes more widely known by the eminent Abderitians, who travel all over the known Greek world.
During the first period of the city’s development, which is structurally defined by the North Precinct, the most famous, important Abderitians of the era were: the poet Anacreon, the sophist Protagoras, the father of atomic theory, Democritus and his teacher Leucippus, but also the politician Nymfodoros. Meanwhile, in the region, important historical events took place such as the passage of the Persians, initially with Darius and later Xerxes, and the participation of the city in the first Athenian Alliance.
During the second time period of the city, which is structurally defined by the south precinct, where today lays the archaeological site, the most famous, important Abderitians are: Vion the mathematician, Anaxarchos the philosopher, the philosopher Ascanius, the philosopher Hecataeus, the engineer Dioclides but also the poet Nikenetos.
In the area took place important, historical events, such as: the Triballians’ invasion in the city. The competition with neighboring areas, and the involvement of Abdera in the Second Athenian Alliance. Democritus has travelled to many places, and was a prolific polymath with wide knowledge of many disciplines, such as ethics, poetry, martial art, painting, physics, mathematics, grammar and phonetics. His works probably were lost by his opponents. Only small excerpts from later authors and the titles of his works are preserved. He had the nickname 'smiley', because he was often cheerful and he used to face the everyday life optimistically, believing that laughter is the source of life.

<text>Archaeological site of Avdira, in the cape of Bouloustra includes the northern and southern precincts, the acropolis of the ancient city and its cemeteries, extending mainly to the NW, N and NE, dating from the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods. Place in the northern precinct preserved sections of the wall and one room buildings prior Clazomenia city of Asia Minor, 7th century BC., parts of the wall of Tiion, the 6th-5th century BC, boathouse of the same era, located on the northeastern edge of the harbor before the region become a land of silting, the ruins of a sanctuary of Dimitra and Kori, dating to the 6th-4th century BC., and the Hellenistic cemetery. The main excavated and visited part of the the site is close to the current port. This is the western part of the southern precinct of the city, which distinguished the western wall, gate towers, roads and houses. First buildings that meets the visitor before entering the ancient city are houses of imperial times, they do not follow the Hippodamio system, the royal Christian cemetery of Polystylo, and luxurious bath ruins of imperial times, from which we can distinguish oval hall and stairway leading to the hypocausts. The residential phase is distinguished belongs to imperial times. Apart from visitable parts of the space ther are much more excavated within a certain distance between them, but none of them the excavation has been completed. At the southern end rises the acropolis of the ancient city, which survives only part of the ancient wall, while the western end, the sea, is distinguished the western breakwater of the harbor. The second port city, eastern, located on the northeast side of the southern precinct. Here also distinguished the jetty and warehouses. Although the image of the ancient city is quite good, especially with regard to private residences, shops, walls and tombs of the inhabitants of the Byzantine of Polystylo, do not identified public buildings. The only public building that we know is the theater, which is located between the northern and southern wall, on a hillside, but they are so damaged they can not be visited. Right now the archaeological site of Avdira remains closed due to lack of security personnel. But there is a possibility to visit during working days and hours upon request.Service Unit: LA Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical AntiquitiesTel.: +30 2541051003</text>

<text>At the unique hilly and rocky ground, at the sandy shores of the Thracian land, opposite the island of Thassos, and between the Nestos Delta and the Lake Vistonida, the first colonists of the region who came from Klazomenes of Asia Minor attempted to set up a town there, approximately during the mid-7th century BC. This first attempt for colonization failed, reasons behind this failure could be the pressure from the local Thracian tribes, but mainly, the unfavorable, climatic conditions, which caused fatal diseases to the population. However, at 545 BC, there is a second attempt for colonization, and this time this attempt comes from the people of the city of Teo, a neighbor city of Klazomenes, who were forced out by the Persians, so they settled in here and found a safe haven.
Gradually, the colonists consolidate their presence, and achieved with rapid growth to create a powerful city-state, with a strong currency which was also a member of the Athenian Alliance. Coins of Abdera we found from ancient Istro, at the estuary of Danube, up to Egypt and Syria, but also from the southern Asia Minor and Mesopotamia, all the way to the west and the Cyrenaica peninsula, indicating that Abdera was a big entity in trading which also had a considerable fleet, something that is confirmed today by identifying the five ports of the city.
The exploitation of farming in the inland, with the rich Thracian plain, in combination with trade, resulted to a great economic growth and prosperity in the city. The coins of Abdera, with the great thematic range, were widely spread to the then ancient world. The first minting of coins took place at approximately 520 – 515 BC. During all the historical periods of the city, the representations of the front side of the coins were always related to one mythical being, the Griffin, which also symbolizes the light. Griffin is also related with the god Apollo, but also with wisdom, strength and vigilance. During several chronological periods, on the back side of the coins there were representations of Apollo, Hercules, and Hermes, all as protectors of the city and their figures were complemented with cobs, beetles, dolphins, bulls and often with a square stamp.
A silver four drachmas coin of Abdera during the Classical period: Representation of the Griffin, a mythological creature and symbol of the city, who stands on a guarding pose and is facing the left, and there is also a repousse goblet. On the upper and lower end of this side of the coin there is the word: EANTI. 5th century BC (approximately 480 – 473 BC), 26mm in diameter and weighing 14.14 grams. On the reverse side it appears an incuse square which is divided into four sections.
Silver stater of Abdera, Hellenistic period: Representation of the Griffin, a mythological creature and symbol of the city, who stands on a guarding pose and is facing the left, also engraved on the left of the Griffin, there is a cicada and right above it, there is the word: ABDE. 4th century BC (approximately 395 – 360 BC), weighing 12.62 grams. On the back side of the coin appears Hercules naked while sitting and his position is towards the left as he turns his head a bit to the right. Hercules is sitting on top of a lion skin, on a rock and he holds on his right hand a club which he places it on top of his right knee. Around the figure of Hercules there is the word: EPI FILADOS</text>

At Abdera, in the modern estate, visitors can see buildings from the period of the Ottoman rule.
There are several scattered architectural finery which manage to survive, such as the Pamouktsoglou Mansion as shown. The mansion was built, around 1860 to 1870, from the Constantinople tobacco merchant Panagiotis Pamouktsoglou. It is a typical front-wide castle-house which has crypts, hatches, basement, and even escape routes! The house has a southern orientation and an outdoor paved patio. Since 1979, the mansion became property of the Authority of the Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and it has temporarily housed the archaeological collection, before the foundation of the Museum. Today, it functions as a hostel, which hosts members of archaeological missions, while at the same time is a place which hosts several cultural events. </text>

<text>The Archaeological Museum of Abdera is operational since January 2000 (Αrchaeological work in Macedonia and Thrace 13,1999). It contains items coming from excavations of the region of the ancient city and they cover a chronological range from the Archaic Age to the late Byzantine period, in other words from the 7th century B.C up to the 13th century AD. The exhibits are presented in three categories named: The public life, the private life and the burial customs of the inhabitants of Abdera.
In the first two sections are exhibited several items which were used in the everyday life of the inhabitants of Abdera, items such as: coins, various tools ( medical instruments, hooks for fishing etc), spindle whorls and loom weights for the loom, mirrors, jewelry, perfume bottles made from glass and alabaster, kitchen utensils and several more items.
In the section talking about the Burial Customs, there are some impressive representations of the graves. The personal belongings of the deceased person or even other valuable items which got placed inside the grave, in other words the offerings as well as the tombstones and the skeletal remains, as they got revealed during the excavations, are exhibited. In addition, representations of the graves containing the remains of the dead are among the items which are exposed in the museum. The arrangement of the funerary objects in combination with the low lighting conditions and other museological elements create evocative atmosphere, referring to the world of the dead.
In the picture you can see one of the two sarcophagi of “Clazomenian” type which are exhibited in the Museum. You can also see in greater detail, the large surface of the top of the sarcophagus, which is named cushion and represents the myth of Troilus: Troilus was the youngest son of Priamos and got killed by Achilles.
Inscription text: Ermonax, the son of Dionysa, who also comes from the generation of Eurysthenis, offers this dedication to the hero who lives in the middle of the city and listens to our prayers. Ermonax, son of the Lord Dionysa, who also comes from the generation of Eurysthenis, lived in Abdera towards the end of the 4th century. So what do we know about him? We know that he was in charge of the mint, like his father. We also know that his wife was called Archinassa. Furthermore, we know that he dedicated to the Eponymous Hero of the City a statue. Do you think that these are not enough? Propably not… And if you have any doubt about the fact that he was a scion of the ruling class, the names talk for themselves: His name means “King Hermes”, while the name of his wife contains the word Anassa i.e. queen. As for his father, not everyone could get named as Dionysa considering that the patron deity of the city was god Dionysus. One more thing: archaeologists and historians have evidence and believe that members of this family belonged to the upper clergy.
Arts and sciences were very advanced in the ancient Abdera. This statement is confirmed by a very important discovery. In the early 1980s, an archaeological research revealed skeletal remains of a young woman, remains which were thoroughly studied by experts and were presented to the scientific community. It is about a <a data-href='http://ubuntu01.ceti.gr/omeka/files/original/fae87f2032e2cdce8b9d5f692e6424d4.pdf' class='pdflink'>successful cranial surgery</a> which was held in the late 7th century BC, by qualified doctors from Klazomenes, who came during the first colonization effort.
Medical science and its practice, was present at Abdera, long before it was established and systematized, by the father of medicine Hippocrates approximately after two hundred years. Among the several writings which we inherited by Hippocrates and his students, there is also his famous work “About the wounds on the head”. Hippocrates visits Abdera during his 3 year staying at Thassos, at the end of the 5th century, in order to examine the health problems faced by the great philosopher Democritus. At the Archaeological Museum of Abdera are exhibited today several medical instruments of the Roman era, which came to light during excavations which took place in the region.</text>

<text>The first Greek colonists arrived, to this Thracian corner, during the middle of the 7th century BC. Their origin was from Klazomenes, a city which existed on the coast of the land of Minor Asia and located opposite of the island of Chios. This colonization attempt failed and after a 70 year period of time, new colonists arrived in the same area. This time these people were coming from Teo, a city located near the ancient Klazomenes and a little further south. This effort was successful and so there is the begging of a brilliant historical period for the Thracian region. They founded the city, in order to honour Hercules’ friend Avdiros who was eaten alive by the wild horses of the Thracian king Diomedes.
Abdera was built on a hilly, area of the coast and the city quickly developed into an important trading and cultural centre. The silver coins of Abdera, which were minted at the local mint had the Griffin as a symbol on them. Today these coins could be found throughout the whole known world of this historical period. From the coast of the Black Sea to Egypt, and from Mesopotamia and Phoenicia, to Cyrenaica peninsula. At Abdera were born and lived very important poets and philosophers for both the Greek as well as the world culture. The excavations in the region started in the 1950s and are still ongoing, and a lot of things about the private and public life of the people of Abdera came to light. The findings are exhibited at the Archaeological museum of the today’s Abdera town.</text>
