The species you will observe depend of course on the season which your visit takes place in the area as well as the time you have in hand to spend here. Otter In dense scrubs, formed from hydrophilic and riparian plants and at the deeper parts of the river which got created due to the continuous flow of water, finds shelter the Otter (Lutra lutra). This is a rare and endangered mammal which is known for its flexibility and its particular speed in swimming. Otters are mainly nocturnal species, which look for their food at the river and at the riparian. The otter is fed on fish, crabs, shellfish, crayfish, water snakes, amphibians, and birds or even other small mammals. Otters are endangered species and are protected in Europe, but here and in the region, Otters have a permanent and stable presence. Golden Oriole During the summer months and at the same places dense from vegetation, we find the Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus), which is easier to hear it, than observe it. Its yellow-greenish colour as well as its natural habit to remain well hidden in dense foliage, make it a kind of a bird which is extremely difficult to observe and one of the hardest to find in the Greek nature. Males are distinguished by their bright yellow colour. The Golden Oriole is a summer visitor of the area and is fed on insects, but also on various wild fruits and nuts. Martin nesting Martin (Ptyonoprogne rupestris), is an endemic and unique swallow which spends the winter in southern Greece at warm areas, such as lagoons. During summer many populations of martins migrate northwards in dry areas and are often found in central Greece at an altitude of above 1,000 meters. At the valley of Nestos, a small number of martins (Ptyonoprogne rupestris) build their nests on cliffs and in places which are always sheltered. This region is considered to be one of the furthest north locations in Greece where this population of martins is spread. Wild Arbutus At various spots along the route, in sunny and well sheltered from the cold air positions, even inside very narrow rock crevices, sprouts the Wild Arbutus (Arbutus andrachne). This plant is distinguished from the other species of the flora of the region, by its impressive brick-coloured smooth trunk as well as by the unique plasticity of its branches. During spring we can see its dense flowers which form inflorescences, during late summer as well as in autumn we observe its ripe red fruits which however are not eatable from humans. Nevertheless, during the difficult winter months, the fruits of the wild arbutus provide plenty of food for several animals as well as the fruits of wild olives. Wild arbutus is a slow growing bush which is very resistant to drought, soil’s erosion and fire. This, were the galleries which are part of national railway network and it got constructed by French and German engineers approximately during 1870 and is functional from 1891 up to today. This railway connects Istanbul with Thessaloniki and Thessaloniki with South Eastern Europe as well as the rest of Europe, but also Athens. The railway takes the region out from isolation and connects it with the surrounding cities of Drama and Xanthi. But it also connects the area with the smaller neighbour semi-mountainous villages like Livera , Imera and Kromniko. In this way, mainly an economic boost is succeeded but also there is a boost on the social and cultural activities of the locals. This is the railway station of Livera in 1996. In the area are constructed a total number of thirty elaborate galleries (tunnels) which are made out of carved local stone. The galleries ensure the smooth and quick access of the train from the plains of Macedonia to the lowlands and urban centres of Thrace, all the way up to Istanbul. The photograph is taken from Paul Zepdji, a photographer from Thessaloniki who has Armenian origins. The photograph is from the album "The railways in Northern Greece (1871-1965)" and got published in 2005 from the Museum of Photography "Christos Kalemkeris" of the Municipality of Kalamaria Thessaloniki. From this point on and for 20 kilometers to the north, the unique snakelike shape of the river is created, which has been shaped by the constant motion of the water for thousands of years. The continuous flow of the water eroded the limestone rocks on the shore and formed the steep, overgrown, riparian, vertical sides and the extensive sandy beaches, where the natural flow of the river permits. Since 1877, the surrounding area of the Straits, is characterized as “Aesthetic Forest” and is protected by the Greek legislation. The main mountain massif, around the Straits of Nestos, that is the Lekani Mountains and the mount of Achladovouno (Chal), create a closed valley, which consists almost exclusively of marble rocks which are characterized by high permeability. Consequently, substantial amounts of water are trapped inside the rock mass of the mountain. Gradually, due to these waters, many sources of water are created at the lowest parts of the mountain. This happens due to the erosion of limestone rocks and thus, large cavities are formed, which often communicate with each other. This geological phenomenon results in water springing at various points of the rock mass and the river banks. Sufficient quantities of this water accumulated from the fog, the rain and the snow is trapped inside the adjacent mountains which are crossed by the river. Thus the river, in turn, provides the region all year round with clear fresh water. From this point, starts the old stone path, which is often carved into the rock of the mountain. For many years, this path used to link with the valley and by extension with the wider economic life of the place, the old settlements Livera and Kromniko. The whole area of the Straits of Nestos is known at a European level, for the variety of wild flowers and other important species of flora and fauna, which are observed all year round. In the riparian vegetation, from the beginning of the route, among the dense greenery in various positions, bloom from the early spring beautiful wild flowers, such as various types of Orchid. Impressive is the presence of Mediterranean plant species of the orchid Orchis italica, which grows among rocks and bushes at the beginning of the trail. We often see this Orchid in groups, in well-sheltered, shady places. The blossoms of the Orchid appear in April in a dense, pyramidal inflorescence and range from dark to light pink, with bright purple spots and stripes. Morphologically, it reminds the anthropomorphic orchids, which we also encounter in other orchid species in the region. The Haberlea rhodopensis, is a rare plant for our country and endemic of the Rhodope Mountains. It belongs to the family of Gesneriads, which consists mainly of tropic plants. So the Haberlea of Rhodope grows in shady limestone areas and in dense parts between the cracks of rocks and where it is possible for the steep rocks to hold little soil and moisture. Here, the Straits of the river, and the cracks of the rocks, consist one of the few areas where this species flourishes in Greece. In Greece, we also find it in the mountains of Menikio, Falakro and Pageo of Macedonia, whereas in Thrace we find it in the Rhodope Mountains and Mount Papikio. The leaves of this plant are serrated and green on top and are covered by lint, while underneath they are brown colored. It is a perennial plant and a protected species from the Greek and European legislation. Among vertical cliffs and at usually steep, sunny places grow the durable Red Tulips (Tulipa Hageri) in small groups. This plant is an endemic species of South Eastern Europe, which can be found in Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. The plant does not exceed a height of 15 cm. Today, it is a quite rare species in the Greek nature, although it has a wide geographical distribution, from southern Greece to Thracian region. In the area we find them, even at an altitude of more than 1,000 meters. Colorful Irises are found in similar surroundings where tulips are found; in scattered, rocky, always sunny, but more accessible places. Their name comes from Antiquity and means colorful rainbow. They are perennial bulbous plants. In this area we could find a specific species of Iris called Iris reichenbachii. This type of Iris is endemic in South East Europe. In Greece it is observed only at the north part of the country. This Iris’s colours vary, ranging from white, yellow, up to deep violet. These species are spread from the troughs all the way up to the peaks of the mountains and they could even be seen on altitudes greater than 1000 meters. The Blue Rock Thrush The Blue Rock Thrush is a bird which we cannot find in general in these lands. However, at steep rocks and often in low altitude and close to the trail, we can find the Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius longirostris). The bird takes its name from the colour of the male bird while the female looks more like the female Common Blackbird, ie brown. The bird is a summer visitor and very alerted when there is human presence. Therefore, when the bird feels there are people close by, it moves quickly to “safer” places on steep sites with good coverage. The bird feeds on various seeds, nuts, invertebrates, insects, and even small reptiles which searches at the wider area. The nest of the Blue Rock Thrush is well hidden in bushes, rocks or cracks and hardly could it be marked. Lastly the bird’s singing is very melodic. It stems from Rila mountain (2.716m.), in southern Bulgaria, between the Aimos and Rhodope mountain ranges. Its total length is 234km., of which 140km. are located in Greek territory. It enters Greece from the north-central part of the prefecture of Drama between the mountains of western Rhodope, mountain Falakro and mountain Lekani. Then, it is the natural border between Macedonia and Thrace and opens into across from Thasos, forming the delta of Nestos. There are many tributaries and streams that collect water in the ground of the prefecture and are poured in Nestos. From the western of the mountain range, Rhodope and the west Despatis, Mousdelis, the big stream, Diavolorema and Arkoudomera are poured. These aquatic volumes are used for irrigation, energy generation (dams of Temenos, Platanovrisi, Thisavros) and the tourist development of the area. The slopes of the river Nestos and of the lakes are covered mainly by oak forests, while the riparian vegetation of the lakes and streams consists of more aquatic plants. Apart from the oaks, the species that compose the lakeside vegetation are: anchovy, ostrya, ash tree, willows, linden or lime tree, maple, alder, field vineyard, dogwood, hazel, ivy, cedar, plane tree, poplar, blachthorn, acacia, wild roses, bramble, elderflower, rowan etc. The herbaceous vegetation includes common wildflowers of oak forests, and aquatic as well, such as: daisy, bluebell saxifrage, rings, euphorbia peplus, wild strawberry, geranium, lychnis coronaria, wild pansy, angelica, artemisiae, brachypodium, plantago, blue grass, knotweed, crowfoot, dandelion etc. The fauna in the lakeside area includes otters, but also animals that move across the whole region, such as: wolf, fox, wildcatroe, hedgehogs, weasels, wild boar. Also, in the extent of lakes we meet amphibians, such as salamanders, frogs and reptiles such as: grass snakes, viper, lizards, turtles, etc. The fish fauna of the lakes are rich in amounts and include mullets (Leuciscus cefalus, Otthrias brandti), round scaled barbell (Barbus meridionalis, B. plebejus), syrtes (Chondrostoma varbarensis), while in the streams there are trouts (Salmo trutta macrostigma, S. trutta fario ). Kalliroi according to the legend was Vistona’s wife. The river Nestos stems from Rodopi and crosses the whole mountain range. Moreover, according to the legend, Rodopi was Strimonas’ (river) daughter and Emos’ (mount) sister! The old residents inspired the names because of the place; myths made these names immortal and as time passed by, new generations by word of mouth used the same names. In this way the legendary past is linked with the living present. In the fertile valleys created while Nestos is crossing the Thracian grounds, you could hear the sound of the mythical Orpheus’ lyra. The people of Xanthi, in the spirit of solidarity and self-awareness that distinguished them during the period of the Ottoman Empire, created associations and promoted the education and training of young people, by all appropriate means. The result of this action is keeping the language and culture throughout the region of Thrace, during the rule of the Ottomans, despite other adverse conditions. The history of the school is reflected in marble inscriptions, at the main entrance, which were destroyed in 1942 by the Bulgarian rulers of the city and restored in 2005. In 1903, during the Ottoman sovereignty in the city, the building received its present form, after being renovated and inaugurated by the Greek Orthodox Community of Xanthi, as indicated by the second restored marble plaque on the frontage. Architectural description: This is a two-storey neoclassical building, with austere and imposing appearance and with an absolute symmetry of faces. Large openings in the windows of the floors provide ample lighting in the classrooms. Inside the ground floor there is a transverse corridor, at the end of which, there is a spacious, wooden staircase leading to the classrooms upstairs. The building has a spacious courtyard that communicates with the adjacent Nursery, building of other city benefactors, Panagiotis and Fotini Staliou. Over time: Originally, the building served as a Mutually Instructive School for Boys and then, as an Urban School for Boys. On the north side, where today is the courtyard of the School,a School for Girls was founded and operated but was demolished in 1972. Since 1920, it operates continuously, as the Matsineio Elementary School of the city. Today it is the First Primary School of Xanthi. During this period, the reform decree of Sultan, the Hatt-i Serif, gave privileges to all, non-Muslim communities of the Ottoman Empire. Then, thanks to this decree, the rest of the city temples were rebuilt. In place of the church of St. John the Baptist, a church existed, which was burnt in 1809, and then in the spring of 1829, it was demolished by the earthquake that struck the city. Almost a century later, in 1924, the adjacent bell tower was built. The current steeple replaced another older one, which existed until 1920. The Temple is triune. It is dedicated to the Birth of John the Baptist on June 24, the Ascension of Christ, forty days after his resurrection, and the Annunciation on 25 March. The Temple celebrates on 29 August, the day of the beheading of John the Baptist. View of the Metropolitan Church, around 1933, during the reconstruction phase of the square. Architectural description: The temple architecturally is a three-aisled basilica of the type known in the 19th century, during the Ottoman Empire. On the outside of the church you can see forged, heavy iron bars on the windows, and various embossed symbols carved in marble or sandstone. The doorframes, at all openings, made of reddish stone, from Mandra area. Notice one of the carvings, which is on the east side, and is situated in a semicircular arc. It was build with small, wedge stones, voussoirs, with two different materials and colors, white and red. In the carving you can read the initials of the name of Christ and the date of construction of the temple. On the east side, cornices, windows and arch are decorated with indigo chevron. All these elements, the focus color (voussoirs, braid), the volume of the sanctuary and dating in the carving confers sovereignty of this aspect in relation to the rest of the church, as was customary to prevail in Byzantine times. The west façade, main entrance of the church, is adorned only by a newer loggia, while the other sides, the north and the south, are unadorned. Inside the church there is a modern, wooden templon and the bishop's throne,pulpit.There is also a women place, on the west side, on a floor, which had previously,particular, latticed grids. One of the most noticeable icons of the temple is the most treasured icon of the Nativity of John the Baptist, which dates from 1841 and is the work of the famous, Mount Athos painter Ioasaf. Other important icons, painted by the same painter and decorating the church are: Christ, Mother of God, John the Baptist, the Annunciation and Saint Charalambos. The Icon of the martyr St. George from Ioannina is a proof, except for the dissemination of the honour of a new and popular saint in Xanthi, of Epirus presence in the city. Interestingly, the performance of the young saint, is reminiscent of King Otto. The icon is a work of Philip the painter, and was created in 1863. On the south wall, inside the church a gravestone is built in memory of Bishop Eugene, who died in 1848. The interesting carved designs, the pontifical bar, the miter, the Dikirion and trikirion, the small scapular and the Holy Grail are all badges of the episcopal office . The Church celebrates on August 29, in memory of the ablation of the head of the Holy, Glorious Prophet, and Baptist John, the patron saint of the city. Then, the procession of the Holy Icon takes place, in the central city streets, up to the main square, where,the Celebration Speech is given by the Bishop of Xanthi and Peritheorio. Architectural description: This is a two-storey stone building with bold features of local architecture and austere appearance, without particular ornaments and it stands out from the surrounding neoclassical buildings.It is Characterized by symmetry and many openings. It consists of a semi-basement, ground and first floors with two reception rooms and twelve rooms. Here you see the face of the building, from Lefkada street. Over time: It has been renovated several times, and has undergone several changes regarding openings, since it operated initially as a residence and later, had other functions. During the Bulgarian occupation, the period of World War II, it was used as a police station, and thereafter, until the mid-1970s, housed the 2nd Police Department of Xanthi. In the picture, it is possibly a celebration of March 25, 1933, in Metropoleos Square . Architectural Description: This is, a two-storey building, with independent houses per floor, and symmetry in faces. It was renovated in 1932. It has no significant external features, except for the prominent doorframes, which integrate vertically the two floors and horizontally, the windows of the first floor. The white doorframes you see, along with the angular, pilasters and cornice create contrast with the beige building. Notice the cast wrought iron, which creates the balcony(exostis). Over time: During the Ottoman rule, the building was used for short periods, as the seat of the Greek Consulate. After the accession of Thrace to the Greek State,it operated as a residence, of the individual priest of the adjacent Cathedral. View of the building from Lefkada street . It is reported, that in 1934, it was known by the name of St. Intercessor or otherwise Panagia Intercessor. According to the investigator and historian of the city Peter Georgantzi, the erection is dated probably in the first period of Ottoman rule and even in the 16th century. Until the early 1990s, the chapel was, inside, floored with old, carved, marble slabs and marble carved candelabra. One even is dated from 1757. Perhaps, these two indications show that, this chapel, is one of the oldest known monuments that have survived after the devastating earthquake of 1829. Architectural Description: Single-aisle, small church with an also small courtyard. Inside the church, there are murals and a modern wooden templon.
