Probably, later, it becomes property of the local church by donation. Architectural description: Two storey building, of neoclassical architecture, with visible stonework defining the vertical edges of the building. The rest is plastered and bears engravings that mimic the ashlar building system of the ancient classical times. Typical is the entrance,with the arched skylight ,pilasters and doorframes openings, all made with easy carved, brown-beige,local stone of Mandra. From the quarries of Mandra, distant from the city of Xanthi about 25 km south, this material with sandstone origin was used, since Antiquity,for the erection of walls, buildings, and funerary monuments in ancient Abdera. Notice, the building, the protective fenders of the openings and the whole structure of the balcony. All of them are made with cast iron. Over time:The building belongs to the Holy Church of Xanthi and Peritheorio. During the period of Ottoman rule served for short periods, as the center of the Greek Consulate. In the early 1990s,it is preserved by the Cultural Development Center of Thrace (PAKETHRA) and, from 1993 to 2005, served as a venue for cultural events. The building was completely preserved, the years 1993 - 1994, from PAKETHRA with its own resources and work of its members. In the picture,there is an inner wall of the floor, made with the technique of "lath", that is wooden frame filled by broken bricks, or small stones and smear, commonly reinforced with straw or goat hair. How it operates today: Today, it serves as a Library of the Holy Church of Xanthi, having more than seven thousand volumes with ecclesiastical and historical content. The Library is open to the public upon request of the Holy Church of Xanthi. Architectural Description: In the first building, that on Antika Street, number 6,there are visible, subsequent alterations, on the outer view. But inside the house there are still murals from the Xanthian artist Theodore Trickis (1898 - 1962), who began his career as a painter and decorator and ended up as hagiographer. In the picture you see, Theodore Trickis, and his work, which adorns the staircase at the first floor. However, the second building on the same plot with number 8, which, in 1907, was claimed and won from Victoria Dimou, niece of Theodore Zalacha, by George Mauromichalis, mayor of Xanthi, retains its original form. The doctor, since 1894, settled in Komotini and was prosecuted, during the period of the First World War, from the Bulgarian rulers of the city. In 1920, he was elected congressman of Rodopi. He was honored for his work, from the Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, with the medal of the "Cross of the Order of King George I". Architectural Description: Neoclassical, two-story building, coated in red color. Here, the building of carved local granite, becomes visible, as you can see it in the basement. All openings of the semi-basement and ground floor, have visible stone doorframes. But look, also the wrought iron in the windows downstairs. The buildings of Antica Street because of their external, morphological characteristics and the flavor of a bygone era that they give off, have served as a living backdrop for television and film productions shooting. Like the television series, which made the book "Bloody Soil" of Dido Sotiriou popular to the public, for which much of the shooting took place in this building. How it operates today: Until today, this building is used as a residence. Most of the houses of the Old Town, are two- storey buildings, with semi-basement and the first floor is accessed by a wooden staircase. In most cases, there are openings that ensure the lighting of the stairs. His great-grand daughter is Melpo Logothetis- Merlie, who was born in Xanthi in 1895. The famous musicologist and folklorist along with her husband Octavio Merlie, founded the Musical Archives of Tradition. After the war this club is called “Centre of Asia Minor Studies-Melpo and Octave Merlie Foundation” and it operates to this day in Athens as a scientific center. Architectural description: Neoclassical, symmetric, corner building with its entrance being on Orpheus Street. The acute angle of the ground floor which is on the corner of Antika and Orpheus Street, becomes a right angle on the first floor, therefore the space becomes more functional due to the construction of the triangular enclosed balconies on the first floor on the Antika street. The building has also iron bars placed at its openings of the ground floor and it also has a balcony (exostis). Moreover, the miter angle in the corner of Antika and Orpheus Street contributes to the better use of public space. How it operates today: The building serves as a residence. Most of the houses in the Old City have many large windows to let the light fill the interior space. Here you can see, the corner room on the ground floor. The building was built on the land ruled by the heirs of Kougioumtzoglou family a land which was the family’s garden by that time. In the picture you see the building, as it was in October 1992. Architectural description: This is a simple, neoclassical building. Its main features are that its front side is plastered, and has engravings which imitate the system which buildings of the ancient classical period were built. Please also note that the bearing masonry is made out of carved local granite. There is a stone belt which separates the floors of the front view and concave cornices run around the roof. There are also noticeable the raised, curved lintel in the door, as well as the iron bars on the windows, made out of cast iron. The iron bars were manufactured in local workshops of the time in order to secure any openings. Over time: In 1979, the property is purchased by Manos Hadjidakis. The famous composer who was born in Xanthi, was dreaming to create the “Musical Feasts” of the city therefore he was searching for a building in order to host their “organisational” needs. He didn’t manage to maintain the building neither to fulfil his dream for his hometown as his interest was quickly faded away since the local authorities didn’t support his efforts. Thus, in 1982, the building was sold again. How it operates today : Until today the building remains uninhabited. It used to belong to the tobacco merchant Antonio Chartzoglou and hosted two families separately. However, from the research done so far, we do not know exactly, who the first resident of the building was. Chartzoglou granted half of the building to his only daughter Melpomene, wife of Demetrius Kougioumtzoglou , who was a tobacco merchant too. Since then, it is known as “Kougioumtzoglou Mansion” mainly by the action of his son, Evangelos, who worked at first as a tobacco merchant in his father’s business in Germany. Evangelos Kougioumtzoglou , a prominent member of the political and social life of the region,was active in Xanthi, Kavala and Athens. Architectural description: This building could be described by its absolute symmetry. It is a neoclassical building with a twin building detached to it. The building shows elements which are influenced by trends of architecture popular in Central Europe at that time. The building’s main characteristics are its many openings and the external decoration of its main view. The building is not in the same building line with its neighbouring buildings and this results in the existence of a nice small garden which is protected with beautiful railings. You can also see the gabled roofs which end in pediment drums in the middle of which there are hexagonal skylights having the type of "the eye of ox ". These skylights are used for the lighting and ventilation of the attic. The openings on the ground floor have pediments whereas those on the first floor have arched endings. All the exterior decoration which you can see, was made with high quality solid bricks and with the, easy to work with, local sandstone. The local sandstone comes from the area of Mandra. This material is also found in other main entrances, in city buildings. The typical iron bars which were made out of cast iron, were manufactured in local workshops of that time. The bars were protecting the openings of the ground floor, they were used for balconies and lastly, they were used in order to separate and secure the garden in front of the building. The interior of these twin buildings could be characterized by the spacious setting, the high-ceilinged rooms, the hardwood floors, stairs, and rich painted decoration which is different in every room. This decoration and mainly the one of the ceilings, took place in 3 phases (1860, 1900, and the end of 1930) by Bavarians and local artists. The variety of themes and designs, which can be admired on the decorated ceilings and walls, unfolds to us the whole history of the bourgeoisie class of the city during the duration of its rise up to its fall. Landscapes, floral decoration and female, allegorical figures were adorned in the first phase. Then it follows a period of tapestries and finally, on the last period we will see simple painted walls. All the paintings have been preserved in a miraculous way up to today. There are some very special buildings which have managed to survive at the back yard of this building. Two independent, small, one-room, vaulted halls operated respectively as male and female bathrooms (or steam rooms) for the tenants of the building. Over time: In 1971, half of the building is reserved by Anna Kaloudi (in the memory of her grandfather Stavros Chatzistavrou) for the House of Letters and Fine Arts of the Municipality of Xanthi. In 1977, the remaining half of the mansion was sold by the heirs of the family of Demetrius Kougioumtzoglou, to the Progressive Union of Xanthi (FEX). FEX has secured the appropriate funds from the Ministry of Culture for this purchase. This is how the building looks during the spring of 2000. How it operates today: The building was restored in 2000 and it operates normally since 2005. It is the only building with such a volume, in Northern Greece, which is fully repaired, both in its construction as well as in its murals. After maintenance took place, the building houses the Folklore Museum of Xanthi until today. The Museum is open daily except Mondays. It contains a great number of exhibits from the social and daily life of the city. A great number of print outs, photographs and letters, as well as everyday objects and tools of the agricultural economy of the region. Inside the maintained halls of the museum, housed exhibits from several families from xanthi. Exhibits ranging from heirlooms to beloved objects which belonged to these families. The interiors of the museum are specifically designed in a way that the visitors could see on the ground floor the social life of the city’s bourgeoisie class, on the first floor their private life and lastly on the basement (used as storage and accommodation of the service staff) parts of the agriculture life and the labour class. Today those plans and designs are kept in the Letters and Arts Center of the city. One of the buildings was donated to the Center in 1968, while the second one was bought in 1976. Today it houses the Folk Art Museum. The two buildings are identical residences built next to each other, with a common roof that ends to a pediment. The buildings develop on three levels and their inside walls are decorated by remarkable paintings. The date of construction can be seen in the inscription of a wall painting which is over the door at the main balcony (exostis). On Antika and Orpheus streets two gates have been built which allow access to the mansion. Thus, both sides of the building are used, having a second separate entrance, except for the central one due to the needs of a modern house of that era. The second entrance leads to the ground floor where there is a terrace. Description of Architecture: The building is remarkable for its architecture which was influenced by the European trends of that era. Special characteristics are the masonry with carved local granite, the intense exterior paintings throughout the building and the bevel formed in the corner. Furthermore, the vertical axis of the entrance protrudes to emphasize the dominant external aspect of the building which is the entrance and the balcony. The protrusion is used for additional lighting, ventilation and provides tenants with bigger view. The architectural design also emphasizes the main aspect of the building with the arched lintels which are found not only at the gate on Antika Street but also at the windows and the balcony door whereas the rest of the openings have a rectangular shape. Inside the building, the rooms are extending around a central lounge. You can notice the painted decoration, the wooden floors and the wooden ceilings with structural peculiarities. Wood is a local building material and, according to the architecture of the time, is used both for the internal coating and for the construction of the internal double staircase. A particularly noteworthy element of the building’s structure is the wooden ceiling of the southeast corner room on the second floor. The wood carved “string” of the frame, which runs around the entire ceiling, is perforated to enable ventilation and air extraction from the roof. There are other buildings in Xanthi where the forged iron bars are from local workshops. In this building the typical beautiful ironwork of cast iron is likely to be of French origin. It protects the openings of the semi-basement and ground floor but they are also used for the entire structure and shape of the balcony (exostis). Inside the building, the ending of the double staircase leads upstairs to the door of the balcony (exostis) and to a reception area which communicates with the other rooms upstairs. The large openings of the balcony door and widows provide the communal room upstairs with plenty of light. Over time: About one hundred years after the construction of the building, the granddaughter and heir of Stavros Hekimoglou, Anna Kaloudi, daughter of Polixeni Hekimoglou and Panteli Kougioumtzoglou, donates the mansion to the House of Letters and Fine Arts of the Municipality of Xanthi in 1971. However during the Byzantine Empire, there was a city with the name Xanthia which was built on the hill north west of the present city of Xanthi. The name Xanthia first appears in 879 ac due to the participation of the bishop of the city at the synod of Konsnantinoupoli the patriarch of which was Fotios the Great. There are references later on of the city which was described as “village” during 1083 at a document found in a Byzantine monastery north of the present city of Xanthi. During 1344 there is the first reference of Xanthi being considered as metropolis. At the centre of the photograph taken back in 1940, you can clearly spot the late Byzantine acropolis of Xanthi. Today, it is difficult for someone to spot the old walls at the North West side of the city because they are covered with vegetation. Therefore, from the 14th century onwards, the city is referenced frequently on documents as a township or town. However after the reconstruction of the city which took place from 1830 to 1845, the city has grown and it got shaped up to the state it has today. The reconstruction of the city started after a catastrophic earthquake which happened during the spring of 1829. So during this period of reconstruction, between 1830 and 1845, there were many workshops with craftsmen from Epirus which appear in the city. Later on there was also an additional phase of construction development which started in 1870 and continued to the following years. This happened because the city of Genisea, a close by city taken its name from the Genisea lowlands, was the administrative centre of the local area. However, a fire destroyed Genisea city and so all the administration and commerce activities were transferred to the city of Xanthi. In the picture you can see a sign from 1880. You can find this sign at the arcade which leads to the khan or guesthouse of Margaritis at the area of the marketplace. During maintenance activities of the sign, a fault lead to a spelling mistake on it. Now you can read <<..Margaritis Isaiou..>> However the correct name according to the spelling rules of that age should be <<…Margaritis Ioanou…>> on that sign you can also read that this person was coming from Epirus. The multicultural social life of the city during the past centuries, was structured around churches and temples and this was how neighbourhoods were formed. It is worthy considering that in the city someone can find Greek orthodox churches, Catholic churches, Jehovah’s witnesses churches, evangelist churches, Armenian churches, Pentecostal churches, but also mosques, Bektashi tekke and vaulted tombs. Members of wealthy urban families were building houses, usually with 2 levels and with additional storage facilities, houses which their architecture trends were a mix of the traditional ones as well as Balkan and west European. There are many tobacco merchants from Xanthi who were “active” socially and financially in many European cities. They were generating more and more incomes from crop growing and processing of tobacco at the border region of Xanthi. Tobacco merchants were distributing tobacco at all the major European markets as well as the Asia. South of the city of Xanthi and at the outskirts of the fertile plain, modern and large warehouses as well as cigarette factories were built. This industrial development, brings other people from different locations to the city of Xanthi. All these people, workers and professionals, were organised in Unions and Parties. Therefore at that point in time in the city of Xanthi, there were Thrakians, people from Asia Minor,Pontus,Cappadocia, Armenia, Black Sea,as well as people of Epirus,of Turkish origin,Pomaks, Gypsies, Sarakatsans and Albanians. The development of the city is noticeable and there are records of more than 50 guesthouses which existed during these times. The latter fact shows a very active commercial activity in the regions. In the picture you can see a sign on Dagli street, which says guesthouse or “guesthouse Averof First Class", on the portico of Michael Karaoli Street which is at the centre of the city and close to the end of Dagli Street. This picture was taken on June ,1991 just before the sign was taken down. Many parts of Theodoros Anggelopoulos’ film “O Thiassos” were filmed in this spot. Today the structure of the Old City is largely maintained against the decisions of the local authorities. This was achieved in the mid 1970s thanks to the efforts of the ex-prefect of the city Mr Konstantinos Thanopoulos as well as the efforts of Chief Inspectorate of Classical Antiquities of Komotini Mr Evangelos Pentazou. Also this combined effort was enforced by groups of people like the members of the Progressive Union of Xanthi ( FEX. 17/05/1976 ).The new town now extends south and west .In the picture you see the Old and Modern town of Xanthi , the valley and in the background the island of Thasos.
