The newest, modern village of Maronia, due to the fear of pirate raids, was built during the 16th century, at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level. The village is considered as one of the most beautiful traditional villages of Thrace. The houses, which are built on the slopes of mountain Ismaros establish parishes around each church, while their amphitheatrical layout, enables each of them to have a great panoramic view of the Aegean Sea all the way from Thasos to Samothrace. During the years of the Ottoman Empire, Maronia was governed by the general assembly of the local elders, as well as by the Committee of the Holy Churches and also from the Ephorate of Schools
