The city of Xanthi didn’t exist during ancient times. However during the Byzantine Empire, there was a city with the name Xanthia which was built on the hill north west of the present city of Xanthi. The name Xanthia first appears in 879 ac due to the participation of the bishop of the city at the synod of Konsnantinoupoli the patriarch of which was Fotios the Great. There are references later on of the city which was described as “village” during 1083 at a document found in a Byzantine monastery north of the present city of Xanthi. During 1344 there is the first reference of Xanthi being considered as metropolis.
At the centre of the photograph taken back in 1940, you can clearly spot the late Byzantine acropolis of Xanthi.
Today, it is difficult for someone to spot the old walls at the North West side of the city because they are covered with vegetation.
