The Chapel of the Ascension of Christ, in its current form, was built in the period of 1850 - 1880, possibly over the tenure of Joachim Sgouros. It is reported, that in 1934, it was known by the name of St. Intercessor or otherwise Panagia Intercessor. According to the investigator and historian of the city Peter Georgantzi, the erection is dated probably in the first period of Ottoman rule and even in the 16th century. Until the early 1990s, the chapel was, inside, floored with old, carved, marble slabs and marble carved candelabra. One even is dated from 1757. Perhaps, these two indications show that, this chapel, is one of the oldest known monuments that have survived after the devastating earthquake of 1829.
