The Holy Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was built around 1839, by workers of Epirus, when bishop was Eugene. During this period, the reform decree of Sultan, the Hatt-i Serif, gave privileges to all, non-Muslim communities of the Ottoman Empire. Then, thanks to this decree, the rest of the city temples were rebuilt. In place of the church of St. John the Baptist, a church existed, which was burnt in 1809, and then in the spring of 1829, it was demolished by the earthquake that struck the city.
