<text>The Archaeological Museum of Abdera is operational since January 2000 (Αrchaeological work in Macedonia and Thrace 13,1999). It contains items coming from excavations of the region of the ancient city and they cover a chronological range from the Archaic Age to the late Byzantine period, in other words from the 7th century B.C up to the 13th century AD. The exhibits are presented in three categories named: The public life, the private life and the burial customs of the inhabitants of Abdera.
In the first two sections are exhibited several items which were used in the everyday life of the inhabitants of Abdera, items such as: coins, various tools ( medical instruments, hooks for fishing etc), spindle whorls and loom weights for the loom, mirrors, jewelry, perfume bottles made from glass and alabaster, kitchen utensils and several more items.
In the section talking about the Burial Customs, there are some impressive representations of the graves. The personal belongings of the deceased person or even other valuable items which got placed inside the grave, in other words the offerings as well as the tombstones and the skeletal remains, as they got revealed during the excavations, are exhibited. In addition, representations of the graves containing the remains of the dead are among the items which are exposed in the museum. The arrangement of the funerary objects in combination with the low lighting conditions and other museological elements create evocative atmosphere, referring to the world of the dead.
In the picture you can see one of the two sarcophagi of “Clazomenian” type which are exhibited in the Museum. You can also see in greater detail, the large surface of the top of the sarcophagus, which is named cushion and represents the myth of Troilus: Troilus was the youngest son of Priamos and got killed by Achilles.
Inscription text: Ermonax, the son of Dionysa, who also comes from the generation of Eurysthenis, offers this dedication to the hero who lives in the middle of the city and listens to our prayers. Ermonax, son of the Lord Dionysa, who also comes from the generation of Eurysthenis, lived in Abdera towards the end of the 4th century. So what do we know about him? We know that he was in charge of the mint, like his father. We also know that his wife was called Archinassa. Furthermore, we know that he dedicated to the Eponymous Hero of the City a statue. Do you think that these are not enough? Propably not… And if you have any doubt about the fact that he was a scion of the ruling class, the names talk for themselves: His name means “King Hermes”, while the name of his wife contains the word Anassa i.e. queen. As for his father, not everyone could get named as Dionysa considering that the patron deity of the city was god Dionysus. One more thing: archaeologists and historians have evidence and believe that members of this family belonged to the upper clergy.
Arts and sciences were very advanced in the ancient Abdera. This statement is confirmed by a very important discovery. In the early 1980s, an archaeological research revealed skeletal remains of a young woman, remains which were thoroughly studied by experts and were presented to the scientific community. It is about a <a data-href='http://ubuntu01.ceti.gr/omeka/files/original/fae87f2032e2cdce8b9d5f692e6424d4.pdf' class='pdflink'>successful cranial surgery</a> which was held in the late 7th century BC, by qualified doctors from Klazomenes, who came during the first colonization effort.
Medical science and its practice, was present at Abdera, long before it was established and systematized, by the father of medicine Hippocrates approximately after two hundred years. Among the several writings which we inherited by Hippocrates and his students, there is also his famous work “About the wounds on the head”. Hippocrates visits Abdera during his 3 year staying at Thassos, at the end of the 5th century, in order to examine the health problems faced by the great philosopher Democritus. At the Archaeological Museum of Abdera are exhibited today several medical instruments of the Roman era, which came to light during excavations which took place in the region.</text>

You can also see in greater detail, the large surface of the top of the sarcophagus, which is named cushion and represents the myth of Troilus: Troilus was the youngest son of Priamos and got killed by Achilles.</text>

</text>

<text>At the unique hilly and rocky ground, at the sandy shores of the Thracian land, opposite the island of Thassos, and between the Nestos Delta and the Lake Vistonida, the first colonists of the region who came from Klazomenes of Asia Minor attempted to set up a town there, approximately during the mid-7th century BC. This first attempt for colonization failed, reasons behind this failure could be the pressure from the local Thracian tribes, but mainly, the unfavorable, climatic conditions, which caused fatal diseases to the population. However, at 545 BC, there is a second attempt for colonization, and this time this attempt comes from the people of the city of Teo, a neighbor city of Klazomenes, who were forced out by the Persians, so they settled in here and found a safe haven.
Gradually, the colonists consolidate their presence, and achieved with rapid growth to create a powerful city-state, with a strong currency which was also a member of the Athenian Alliance. Coins of Abdera we found from ancient Istro, at the estuary of Danube, up to Egypt and Syria, but also from the southern Asia Minor and Mesopotamia, all the way to the west and the Cyrenaica peninsula, indicating that Abdera was a big entity in trading which also had a considerable fleet, something that is confirmed today by identifying the five ports of the city.
The exploitation of farming in the inland, with the rich Thracian plain, in combination with trade, resulted to a great economic growth and prosperity in the city. The coins of Abdera, with the great thematic range, were widely spread to the then ancient world. The first minting of coins took place at approximately 520 – 515 BC. During all the historical periods of the city, the representations of the front side of the coins were always related to one mythical being, the Griffin, which also symbolizes the light. Griffin is also related with the god Apollo, but also with wisdom, strength and vigilance. During several chronological periods, on the back side of the coins there were representations of Apollo, Hercules, and Hermes, all as protectors of the city and their figures were complemented with cobs, beetles, dolphins, bulls and often with a square stamp.
A silver four drachmas coin of Abdera during the Classical period: Representation of the Griffin, a mythological creature and symbol of the city, who stands on a guarding pose and is facing the left, and there is also a repousse goblet. On the upper and lower end of this side of the coin there is the word: EANTI. 5th century BC (approximately 480 – 473 BC), 26mm in diameter and weighing 14.14 grams. On the reverse side it appears an incuse square which is divided into four sections.
Silver stater of Abdera, Hellenistic period: Representation of the Griffin, a mythological creature and symbol of the city, who stands on a guarding pose and is facing the left, also engraved on the left of the Griffin, there is a cicada and right above it, there is the word: ABDE. 4th century BC (approximately 395 – 360 BC), weighing 12.62 grams. On the back side of the coin appears Hercules naked while sitting and his position is towards the left as he turns his head a bit to the right. Hercules is sitting on top of a lion skin, on a rock and he holds on his right hand a club which he places it on top of his right knee. Around the figure of Hercules there is the word: EPI FILADOS</text>
