Description
In the 8th century BC Chian colonists reached the Thracian coastline and founded the colony of Maronia, near Ismarus, where the Thracian tribes were based. Over the centuries the settlers had reciprocal, cultural exchanges with local people. In the new area they found mild Mediterranean climate, fertile plains for growing olives, cereals and vines –of which they had a tradition and a natural harbor to fishand promote trade. The port of ancient Maronia flourished, which yielded profits and prosperity for the residents of the city, but also fostered competition with their neighbors.
