Description
During the Roman period, the city experienced a new prosperity, thanks to the free city status, but also thanks to the significant improvement of the road network serving the transfer of goods to the mainland. Egnatia Street was passing north of Mt Ismaros, bypassing the port and was accessible through some passages.Remains of buildings from this period are preserved in the port of Agios Charalambos 4-5 km. south of the modern village of Maronia. The Roman Agora was accessed through a monumental entrance of local marble, built in honor of Emperor Hadrian.
