Description

The seasons follow one another in space as in time. The Byzantine city of Maronia was significantly smaller compared to the ancient Roman city. It corresponded to the current coastal settlement of AgiosCharalambos and to the olive grove in the location of "Paliochora". In the center an early Christian basilica of the 5th-6th century AD has been excavated, whichwas turned into a graveyard two centuries later and then intoa settlement. Impressive are the movable findings, mainly ivory statuettes, samples of the sculpture of the early Christian period.
Notice the architecture and the mosaic decoration of the basilica.
In how many aisles was it divided? In which part are the mosaic floors best preserved?

Did you find the spot?

Correct Answer

YES

DescriptionCorrectAnswer

Right! It is a three aisled basilica the foundations of which have been excavated. The atrium has a deviation from the longitudinal axis due to the existence of other buildings or a road crossing the area.
